This was also a problem for us in the old system, the inconsistency of alphabetical lists throughout the system. For example, candidates listed on a course are in first name order but when you print the course list out it changes to Surname order. Likewise, candidate's names listed on an invoice don't appear to be in any particular order. Then when you search for a candidate within the Users area, the lists appear to be in Surname order but then are not sorted in First name order alphabetically after that, it is just a list of all the same Surname's and the first names appear random. This runs through lots of different areas on the system and although we ignored it on the old system, we did expect that this would be sorted in the new one.
